Catkins are a hanging spike of a bunch of tiny flowers that you might see on a tree or shrub in late winter or be spring. These miniature flowers open before leaves emerge in spring. Typically male but not always, they release pollen and aid in reproduction then fall from the tree.

We’re a group of non-destructive, cute, weird looking living organisms hanging out on tree and rock surfaces. We’re composed of algae and fungus living in a symbiotic relationship.

What the heck does that mean? It means that algae and fungi work together to help each other live. Algae photosynthesizes and fungi protects its partner from drying out.

Lichens come in so many shapes and forms. Powdery, crusty, flat and leafy, cup shape and shrub shape. But the main take away is that they are always harmless to our trees.

Fun fact: hummingbirds use lichens to camouflage the outer layer of their nests.

Just like trees, woody shrubs can also benefit from pruning. Whether it’s to remove dead material, to help achieve a certain shape, or to influence flowering.

It’s typically a safe bet to prune your shrubs in winter when diseases are at bay. However, there’s always exceptions to the rules aren’t there?

Spring-flowering shrubs like lilacs, viburnum, and chokeberry produce flower buds on year old wood. If you prune them in the winter then you’ll be cutting off your spring flower show. Instead, these will need to be pruned after they bloom but before the new flower buds set.

Summer-flowering shrubs like rose-of-Sharon, hydrangea and smokebush flower on new growth. Shaping these up in winter or early spring before bud break is a good plan. Any later than that can possibly cut off the summer blooms you’re looking forward to.

Dormant period pruning helps support disease management and reduce stress on your trees. It’s also a great time to clearly see the shape of your tree. Healthy fruit need an open canopy to allow for air flow and to increase sunlight. Without leaves on your trees, the branching structure can be looked at much more easily. Dead material can also be identified and cut out creating a much more productive fruit crop in the summer and fall! 🍎🍐
