The key to successfully watering trees and shrubs is to water them deeply. Be sure to watch for water actually seeping into the soil rather than running away from your tree, especially on hard dry soil on an incline. Shoot for watering new plantings every 3 days unless we get a really good hard rain. Ideally through Thanksgiving 🎃

Producing figs in Wisconsin is a labor of love for Sara, one of our THM clients. She grows about 40 trees in pots. She moves them around the yard all day to catch the maximum amount of sunlight. Fig tree fruit need a lot of heat to ripen. Sara puts all the trees to bed in her garage at night to ensure they stay warm. All of this is a full time job. But the fruits of her labor is truly sweet!

Nothing’s better on a hot August day than a glas

Nothing’s better on a hot August day than a glass of lemonade. But have you tried staghorn sumac lemonade?

Some people may call them trees and others shrubs, whatever you call them, Wisconsin’s native staghorn sumac is easily identifiable by its crooked trunks, velvety twigs, and densely clustered, cone-shaped red fuzzy berries that sit upright off the stems.

Wisconsin also has poison sumac as well, however the poison species lives in very wet soils along with water loving plants like cattail and jewelweed. Most importantly, poison sumac has greenish-white berries that hang down loosely from the stems.

The delicious sour taste of staghorn sumac comes from an acidic coating on the berries, also called drupes.

To make your pitcher of sumac lemonade:

-pick about 5 cups worth of drupe clusters

-put the seed clusters in around 4 quarts of cold water. You can put them in whole or use scissors to cut them into smaller pieces.

-leave your pitcher of water and berries out overnight. Stir vigorously when it’s convenient throughout the day.

-the following day, taste your tea before straining out the berries. If you’d like the flavor stronger or more sour then add more berries and continue to steep in cold water. (Steeping in hot water makes the tea too astringent)

-strain the sumac lemonade through a cheesecloth

-add a cup of honey or maple syrup to sweeten. Add the juice of two lemons. Feel free to get creative and add other herbs to flavor or garnish. Add ice and serve.

Sometimes more than one tree can have the same com

Sometimes more than one tree can have the same common name. This can obviously confuse things when trying to talk about a certain tree and its specific needs.

Two Wisconsin natives that share a common name are Ostrya virginiana and Carpinus caroliniana. Both trees can be referred to as Ironwood because of their hard wood.

The unique fruit of these natives both have ornamental and wildlife value. Carpinus have small nuts that are housed in leafy bracts. Ostrya have nuts hidden inside papery pockets that closely resemble hops. Carpinus has smooth, sinewy bark whereas Ostrya has textured, flakey bark. Either tree can be planted as a specimen or naturalized.

Once you get acquainted with these trees you’ll be sure to start noticing them while on a hike or camping. Carpinus are often seen on stream banks and Ostrya can be found growing underneath oaks. Both trees are larval hosts for Swallowtail butterflies.
